Confessions of a Chocoholic

If a sweet tooth can be genetically passed on, then my love of chocolate is an inherited trait from my paternal grandmother. Frequently, when we'd make the trip to visit her, we'd pick up some chocolate frozen custard for her (and us) to enjoy. If we wanted a treat or dessert for grandma, we knew she'd most enjoy the chocolate ones. And I'm the same way.

In my humble opinion a dessert is not a dessert unless it is partially or wholly made up of this delectable ingredient, but it has to be the right kind. I don't mean like European vs. American chocolate, though I do appreciate the creaminess of the chocolate from across the ocean. I'm really not a big chocolate candy or bar fan. I much prefer something with real chocolate substance like gooey brownies with ice cream, fresh-baked cookies or moist cake.

But if we're out of the good stuff, then I may slightly lower my chocolate expectations to include hot fudge a la mode, or lower them further still to snitch a piece of candy from the kids' stash. I will admit to even pilfering chocolate chips in times of a chocolate famine.

Are you a chocoholic? If so, what type of chocolate do you prefer? What's your favorite dessert?

I love chocolate and dessert. I prefer pies over cake, my favorite is lemon, although that isn't chocolate! But my mom makes a cake that has a pecan sandie like crust, a cream cheese mixture and a chocolate mixture layered--topped off with whip cream. I love that!

I love chocolate! I'm not a big icing fan. If you put icing on my chocolate brownie, I'm probably going to scrape it off. My favorite dessert would probably be a chocolate raspberry cheesecake. Yum!

I'm with Julie. I don't really like icing. That picture is more my style. Yum!

Oh yeah! Give me a brownie any day of the week and I'll take care of the pan.

I'm totally a chocoholic. And I'm not too partial...well, if I had my choice it would be European chocolate, but if none of that was around then I would go for anything. Anything resembling chocolate is fine with me. Sometimes I crave it so bad I feel possessed.

Maybe that was too much of a share. Sorry.

Jessica - Okay, I'm drooling over your mom's cake! :) Sounds yummy.

Julie - I'm with you - not a huge frosting fan either. Especially if I'm eating my brownie with ice cream!

Stina - I was really craving something chocolatey after writing this post. :) I want me some of that lava cake too!

Wendy - Do you like mint brownies? Those have become a new favorite of mine.

Loree - There are some dark chocolate stuff I enjoy!

Erin - LOL! I don't know if I could ever completely give up chocolate - at least not for long periods. :)

Oh yes! And I totally do the chocolate chip thing too, only when I'm desperate. :)

Right now I'm all about Cadbury mini-eggs. Mmm...it's a good thing they don't sell them all year-round.

Angela - We're very short on real chocolate here too. :) I need to make cookies or something.

Sarah - Chocolate chips in cookies work great, but yeah, by themselves they just sort of take the edge off a chocolate craving. :)

Melissa - I have family who love Cadbury mini-eggs; they'll freeze them to have all year round!

Ooh, you've made me so hungry! I usually go for dark chocolate, because you know that you can totally justify that as being very good for you. :) I'm sure I saw a study on the news about that!!

Sandra - I've heard that too - dark chocolate being good for you! I think that's great justification.

Jessie - Ditto! Chocolate cures all manner of ills. :)

Oooh, I love chocolate too!! I'm so happy I can blame it on genetics. *grin*
I like dark, real chocolate. I don't care for candy bars or "cheap" chocolate (yes, I'm a spoiled chocoholic brat, lol) I add choc. chips to brownies and adore Godiva. :-)

I LOVE chocolate. I prefer milk chocolate over dark though. :) And my favorite dessert? That's a toughie... I love chocolate cream pie and coconut cream pie, but I'm a huge fan of ice cream as well. I hate anything with fruit in it that qualifies as a dessert. Bleh. :)

Jessica - I'm going to have to add chocolate chips to my brownies! That's sounds scrumptious!

Chantele - My sister-in-law usually has a chocolate cream pie at Thanksgiving for those of us who don't view any other kind as dessert. :)

Mmm. I'll take all those desserts you mentioned.

Although mine doesn't HAVE to have chocolate to satisfy! I love me a good fruit dessert, too.

I am most definitely a choco-holic and was very excited to discover that real dark chocolate actually satisfies me after a couple bites - I get that wonderful chocolate "buzz" (though it's not really a buzz. It's its own unique thing). But yes, if good dark chocolate isn't around, I'll resort to anything! I'll even take baking chocolate and concoct a quick, sinful ultra rich hot chocolate out of it, in a pinch!

I completely agree that dessert just isn't dessert without chocolate! I made Ghiradelli brownies last night, and they are SOOOO scrumptious!

Margo - Hot chocolate out of baking chocolate, that does sound sinful and rich and delicious. :)

Shallee - Can you share some of those brownies? We're reaching serious chocolate famine at our house right now. :)
