However, I am pleased to report that my anti-game phase is wearing off - a product of reluctantly joining in and then having a great time (the story of my life, for sure). While I still wouldn't choose playing a game over other activities like reading or watching a movie or going out to eat, I have rediscovered the fun of board games. My newest favorites are Apples to Apples, Telestrations, and the dice game Farkles.
What about you? Do you like playing board games? What are your favorites?

I love playing scrabble with my kids. They are such cheaters and make up some great words. =) They prefer Monopoly but I find it sooo boring. It is a great way to get the family together.
We love board games around our house. Everyone is competitive enough that it's fun. We don't go easy on people either (even the kids). Instead we opt for taking handicaps to make the competition as even as possible.
I'm happy to say we're growing out of the "Walmart" games and into some much more interesting ones like Catan, Eye to Eye, Stone Age, and Dominion. They are more expensive, but a LOT more fun.
My husband and I used to get asked all the time to play games at is brother's house. They play the strategy games that last hours, yuck. After making up random excuses for a year we finally told everyone we don't like games:) What a relief, no more invites! We do like short term games like Super Uno and Mexican train.
No I detest board games! I dont know where these feelings came from. But like Jack Handy would say, "Maybe its because my dad was killed while playing a board game." No seriously, I probably just suck at them.
E. Arroyo - I love Scrabble. As a kid me and my sisters would always try to find crazy words in the dictionary until my dad said if we had to look we'd lose a turn. :)
John - It's crazy how expensive games can be! My boys really like the Lego games, which aren't cheap either but a lot of fun.
Kelly - Love it! I'm with you - shorter games are more my thing.
Jessie - LOL! I love Jack Handy.
Never was into board games, but I do enjoy family time-game time.
Sorry, typo above.
We are a family who love games. Holidays and family gatherings are filled with game playing.
For a strategic play, I love to play Settlers of Catan.
Cynthia - I do have fun playing games with the kids.
Loree - I've played Settlers and it wasn't too bad. I think I just don't like strategy games because I rarely win! :)
Oh goodness, you would pass out if you saw our game cabinet...or I should say cabinets. The funny thing? My husband came home the other day and said he wanted to bid on an eBay item...20 board games. I said, "Ummm, I'm not ready to move my clothes out of the closet for those games." I love to play games, but even I have my limits. :)
Sarah - That is hilarious! We have a game closet, but it's just a small section in the linen closet. I do think we'll need to do some rearranging if the kids get anymore games for birthdays or Christmas.
I'm a game lover, but if I play with my husband he ALWAYS wins! ALWAYS! It is like he has a super power. So my favorite game to play is Pandemic, because everyone plays against the board. Either you all win or you all lose.
Angie - That sounds like a great game! I'm pretty competitive when it comes to playing a game with my husband, so I like the idea of us both winning or losing. :)
I think I would like board games more if my kids were older and could play WITH me rather than run across the board and make a mess of everything. So right now, I'm kind of a HATER, but I still like them. (Does that makes sense?) We played madgab (Which isn't really a "board" game) for Christmas and it was fun. I also like scattergories.
Abby - Now that my kids are getting a little older, they like more than just Candyland, which is fun. :)
I'd rather play games, and we're ALMOST to the point where we can all play some kind of "normal" game.
I'm like you. It stems from not being very good at games. But, I LOVE Apples to Apples. I have to give in and play, because my son is a game freak!
Jolene - That is a great milestone. :)
Jenny - I think the game-hating gene skipped my kids.
My husband is like this in my family. He never wnats to play, though he enjoys it once we get going. The sad part is my kiddos always want to play. It gets to be boring if it's just me all the time!
I love Apples to Apples...but I love this game called Dominion. It's awesome and you guys would like it.
The key is probably new games - I could very easily not play Monopoly ever again in my life and never miss it. Oh, yeah, and who you are playing with - that makes a difference too!
Erin - I haven't played Dominion yet, but my husband has and loves it. Not sure if it's too much strategy for me or not. :)
Margo - Well said! Definitely the company and/or a new game to play can make game time even funner.
Tamara - I'm better about playing games with the kids then with other people. :)
Ha! I'm the same way. I really resist playing, but it IS a good/fun thing to do with my family and the boys LOVE it. And ... I usually have a decent-enough time, lol. ;)
Ali - I promise never to suggest playing games at crit group! :)
I like certain games. Board games aren't usually my favorite, but I LOVE games like Apples to Apples and Curses. I love when the point of the game is to interact with others.
Shallee - I like those type of games more than board games, but I wasn't sure what to call them. Interactive games? Group games? LOL. :)
I don't love playing board games, either, but my absolute favorite is Settlers of Catan. It's great! Even for a game hater. :)
i don't like how competitiveness can transform even the nicest of people into cruel creatures, but when games can be played in nice, civil ways, i like settlers and dominos.
Peggy - I have played Settlers and *gasp* actually had fun. :)
Aguilar - I don't think I ever play uncivially, but my competitive drive does kick in when I'm playing some games.
Jen - I'm smiling at this! Maybe we need to form a group of non-gamers or an occasional-depends-on-the-game gamers group. :)
We have always played Scrabble with our son, from the time he was learning to spell and read. It really was fun and helped him become a great speller/reader.
We also love Uno!
Texas Playwright Chick - I heart Scrabble too! :)
